Though I normally cover dining (and soon travel!) and the occasional Polo piece (tee hee) for L.A. Confidential , I hadn't done one of their "Power Player" pieces...until I was asked if I'd like to do a write up on one of Los Angeles's best known families, the Semlers. The Semlers, headed by patriarch Ron, are the irrepressibly quirky force behind Malibu Family Wines, and the very classification of Malibu as an American Viticultural Area. Bloomberg: These New Airplanes Have Swanky Onboard Lounges

The era of airplane bars has come and gone. Nostalgic photos from the 1960s and '70s show trendy jetsetters throwing back cocktails in piano bars on the top deck Boeing 747s, and Virgin Atlantic has practically built its entire branding around the swinging setting of its onboard bars. But travelers these days are seeking more multipurpose spaces, especially as flights get longer and longer. I've had the opportunity to spend time in a few of these myself, so check out what I thought as well as insights from cabin designers on why airlines are shifting from drinking dens to co-working spaces on their planes in my latest on Bloomberg: The Airplane Bar is Dead. HotelChatter: Andaz San Diego's King-Size Bunk Beds

One of the first pieces I ever wrote as a freelance writer was a roundup of downtown San Diego hotels for LA.com a couple years ago. Back then, the Andaz San Diego was still the Ivy Hotel, but these days it's joined the Hyatt family of hotels, and is looking pretty spiffy. It still has a bit of a party atmosphere, though, as you'll see from my story on their Star Suite. As soon as I heard that it featured mirrored ceilings, a stripper pole, and king-size bunk beds, I knew there was a story to write. Luckily my editor at HotelChatter agreed, and asked me to go on an investigative visit to the sixth-floor suite during my last visit to San Diego. As you'll see, the beds are indeed impressive, and hopefully I'll be posting a gallery of my other photos of the room including the full wet bar, the stripper pole, and the party shower (yeah, it's big enough to throw a party in).
